We recently picked up a heavily crashed BMW E90 out of the Mid-Atlantic—an ex-NASA race car that had taken a significant front-end hit.


The plan is to bring it back as an endurance car for World Racing League GP2 class and ChampCar Endurance Series EC class, while also using it as a seat-time for the Condor Speed Shop crew.
The car came as a bare shell with no drivetrain or suspension. The front of the chassis was heavily damaged, with both frame rails completely twisted, and the original aluminum front subframe was bent along with them.

We sent the car to a local body shop we’ve worked with for years. They repaired several of our crashed BMW E30 race cars back in our Spec E30 days, so they understand what matters on a race chassis.

The repair took roughly 19 hours on the frame machine. During that time, the rails were pulled back into position and the chassis was measured throughout to make sure everything was back in spec.
The damaged front subframe was replaced during the process. Once the chassis was corrected, the replacement subframe bolted in without any modification, which confirmed that everything was back where it needed to be.

We installed a front bumper, two fenders, a radiator support, and both headlights and panel alignment matched perfectly to the straightened chassis.

This will be an endurance-focused build, with an emphasis on consistency, reliability, and ease of operation across multiple drivers.
The drivetrain plan is a BMW N52 engine paired with a ZF 6HP automatic transmission. The N52 gives us a predictable, durable baseline for long sessions, and we know what it needs to be made reliable.
The transmission choice is partly functional and partly for testing. The ZF 8HP automatic transmission has become a more common swap, but not many people are running the 6HP on track. This gives us a chance to see how it performs in a real endurance racing environment.
For suspension, the car will run Öhlins coilovers, which we’ve had good results with in the Spec E9x series. The dampers are affordable and very track capable.
This project ties into a few things we’re already working on.
It lines up with the direction of Spec E9x racing series and gives us another platform to apply what we’ve learned from sprint racing in a longer format.
It also serves as a development car for Condor Speed Shop. We’ll be running a number of our own components and using the car to evaluate durability, fitment, and serviceability over longer sessions.
With the chassis straight and verified, the next steps are straightforward: drivetrain install, cooling system layout, suspension setup, and wiring.
