Summer was in full bloom and the Crenshaw Squad was riding high after their win at the Monarch a few weeks prior. Next up on the calendar would be the Land’s End International Hill Climb, one of the oldest and most historic motorsports events in the United States. Land’s End is always a season highlight for the drivers and fans. It’s a very well-attended event and the energy from the spectators pairs perfectly with the beautiful surrounding scenery.
The Rally/AWD Class was packed with entries from many of the usual suspects and some other fairly serious cars from competitors such as Flatirons Tuning and Vermont SportsCar. After a relatively standard practice session, Fraser managed to qualify their E30 second only behind Duncan Smith and his WRX. “2nd place qualifying was good for morale and held promise for the potential of actually getting on the podium for race day, but Janis Dancis is known for some serious sandbagging in his Mitsubishi Evo- which immediately became apparent after our first competition run”. Janis had managed to drop something like 12 seconds off of his practice time reported Fraser.
This would bump the team back down to 4th place behind Duncan, Janis and one of the Vermont Sportscar competitors. Soon though, Janis would suffer a broken strut getting the Crenshaw team back on track for a podium for the time being.
“As a driver, I tend to go pretty fast when I'm not trying to and to overdrive the car when the pressure is on. The pressure was on for that second run so I immediately drove into the ditch. The run didn't really get any better with random mistakes all over the place so 4th it was. But, our friends got onto the podium in 2wd in another E30 vs Jeff Zwart's big bucks Porsche, there was more than enough bad champagne to go around, and we had the rest of the afternoon to kick back. Success!“, said Fraser.
Though off the podium for this event, morale was still high. How can it not be when rallying in the beautiful Colorado hillsides? The car held together well and stayed very competitive despite the off earlier in the day. A sister, two-wheel drive E30 landing a podium finish is also a highlight, and proof that these old cars can still be competitive when built and equipped properly.
Epilogue-Condor Racing Components for Rally Cars
We at Condor Speed Shop have been manufacturing BMW performance parts suitable for rally cars for over 15 years. You can have a look into some examples at Championship level contenders and their build specs both here with the Crenshaw Crew as well as Gravelwerkx and their ARA E36 build.
The abuse rally cars take is unique. This faction of motorsport is the ultimate proving ground for any component, particularly driveline bushings and mounts. Competitors cannot afford to hassle with materials that will wear over time and provide inconsistencies during an event.
Many race/rally-winning, championship-level teams choose to run our UHMW mounts and bushings with great success. The best part is these components can also be run on the street just as easily, offering the perfect balance of comfort and optimal performance. These components also come with a lifetime guarantee for racers and street cars alike. Head over to our site and have a look at the options that we have available for your BMW today!
